Internal Medicine

Physicians who specialize in internal medicine, commonly known as Internists, focus on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of conditions that affect adults. An Internist may be an adult’s primary care provider, like a Family Practitioner, but they typically handle more complex chronic illnesses and patients with multiple health risk factors or problems. Internists may focus on general internal medicine or opt for additional training to sub-specialize in one or more of the 13 recognized areas of Internal Medicine (e.g. cardiology, oncology, gastroenterology, and pulmonology).
Internal Medicine specialists may be a MD (Doctor of Medicine) or a DO (Doctor of Osteopathy).
